4G on the main operators

Lahore is where most travellers discover that Pakistan is not what they were told. The walled city, the Badshahi Mosque, the Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens are Mughal grandeur at full scale, and the food — from Gawalmandi at midnight to a plate of nihari at dawn — is reason enough to come on its own.

  • Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort at golden hour
  • The walled city on foot, early, before the traffic
  • Thursday-night qawwali at Baba Shah Jamal
  • The Wagah border ceremony — theatrical, and unlike anything else
  • Food: Gawalmandi, Anarkali, and a breakfast of halwa puri

The honest downsides

  • Air quality between November and January is genuinely poor. Asthmatics should plan around it.
  • May to September is 40°C and humid. The city is best October to March.
  • Traffic is chaotic; nothing takes as long as the map says.
