Deosai & Astore Wilderness

Eight nights across the second-highest plateau on earth

8 nightsJul–Sepmoderate

A short season and a very particular trip. Deosai is 4,000 metres of rolling grassland, in flower for about eight weeks a year, with brown bears in it and almost nobody else. We camp on the plateau for a night, which is the whole point.

  • Sheosar Lake with Nanga Parbat behind it
  • A night camping at 4,000 metres on the plateau
  • Wildflowers at their peak in late July
  • Marmots, ibex, and a real chance of brown bear
  • The Astore valley on the way out

About 30 hours on the road across 8 nights. Northern Pakistan is big and the roads are mountain roads. We show the driving day by day below rather than burying it, because the commonest complaint in this business is a transfer nobody was warned about.

Elevation across the trip

Altitude is the thing that most often spoils a trip up here. This is the profile we actually follow, with the acclimatisation nights built in.

Fitness and difficulty

No trekking beyond day walks, but you sleep at 4,000 metres. We build the acclimatisation in through Skardu first, and anyone who struggles is driven down rather than pushed on.

Not quite right?

Add a few days in Skardu, drop the long transfer, travel a month earlier, upgrade where it matters and save where it does not. Start from this itinerary and change whatever you like — customisation is free, and you pay only for the trip you confirm.
